The way to sleep on the Sunnah
The honorable Sunnah of the Prophet organized and defined our actions in everything. Following the example of the Messenger (may God bless him and grant him peace) is the way to love God. Some may wonder how the Messenger slept?
- The Prophet (may God bless him and grant him peace) used to sleep at the beginning of the night and get up at the end of it. When he went to bed, he would dust him with a robe, lie on his right side, and say: “In your name, O God, I die and live.”
- Then he brings his palms together and blows into them, reciting Al-Mu’awwidhatayn and Surat Al-Ikhlas, and wipes his honorable body from the head to the bottom of his body, then rests his right palm, and says: “Praise be to God who fed us, watered us, sufficed us, and sheltered us.
- The Prophet (may God’s prayers and peace be upon him) says: “When one of you lies down, let him say: In your name, my Lord, I place my side, and in you I raise him up. If you hold my soul, have mercy on it, and if you release it, protect it with the way you protect your righteous servants.” And when he wakes up, let him say: “Praise be to God, who has kept my body well. He responded to my soul and allowed me to remember him.” Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi
The Noble Messenger also teaches us what to do when waking up during the night, and how to benefit from insomnia and intermittent sleep. On the authority of Ubadah ibn al-Samit (may God be pleased with him), on the authority of the Prophet (may God’s prayers and peace be upon him) he said: “Whoever is dismayed at night and says: There is no god but God He alone has no partner, to Him belongs dominion, to Him is praise, and He has power over all things. Praise be to God, and Glory be to God, and there is no god but God, and God is great, and there is no power nor strength except with God. Then he said: O God, forgive me, or his supplication will be answered, If he performs ablution and prays, his prayer will be accepted.” Narrated by Al-Bukhari
It is also Sunnah to sleep in a state of purity, and it is also preferable to perform ablution before sleeping, even if it is in a state of ritual impurity. On the authority of Muadh bin Jabal (may God be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of God (may God’s prayers and peace be upon him) said: “There is no servant who spends the night in a state of purity, then becomes disgraced during the night.” So he asked God for something of the matter of this world, or of the matter of the Hereafter, but He gave it to him.” Narrated by Al-Albani and Ibn Majah
